Business grant and relocation in Kent news

The University of Kent is continuing its major investment in the Medway campus by creating twenty new academic posts. Of these positions - which will be taken up from September 2010 - ten are at professorial level.

Seven of Kent's new professors will take up their positions in the fields of Law, Criminal Justice Studies, Social Sciences, Sport, Business Management, Informatics and Music and Audio Arts. This investment in existing subjects at Medway will further develop the University's academic and research portfolio.

The remaining three new professors - for Fine Art, Design, and Dance and Physical Performance - will lead the University's expansion of its arts provision at Medway. The arts development is also supported by a £7 million capital investment by the University of Kent within Chatham Historic Dockyard.

Combined with the £3 million contributed to the Medway Park sports and leisure facility, the University's latest capital investment in the region stands at £10 million.

Professor Clare Mackie, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the University of Kent, said Kent's investment would see the Medway campus making even greater strides. 'The announcement by HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England) last autumn of 700 new student numbers for Medway was the highest allocation to any centre of education in the UK. This provided national recognition of Medway's achievements,' she said.

'Our investment is extremely timely, given the increase in applications to the Medway campus of more than 40 per cent, year on year.

'The appointment of the ten new professors will triple our academic leadership at Medway. At a time of cutbacks in higher education, we are strengthening our position, which is exciting news for all associated with the University.'

The University of Kent also recently revealed it is investing an additional £200,000 in new academic books for students at Medway.
