The Pines Calyx earns place in prestigious new ethical guide

Wednesday 10th February 2010

Kent’s most eco-friendly conference and events venue, The Pines Calyx in St Margaret’s Bay near Dover, has become one of the first venues in the world to win a coveted place in a new travel guide from renowned publisher Alastair Sawday.

The Ethical Collection comprises properties from around the globe, the owners of which have worked hard to make sure their business has a positive impact on the environment. They range from centuries-old restored Spanish farmhouses to stunning eco retreats in India.

To be included in the collection, each venue has to meet strict criteria and earn one or more ‘stamps’, for Environment, Community or Food. The Pines Calyx has achieved all three.

The Environment stamp is awarded to owners who are working hard to reduce the environmental footprint of their property; the Community stamp is given to owners using their business to make significant contributions to their local community; while the Food stamp goes to those with a proven passion for serving local and organic food.

A spokesman for Alastair Sawday Publishing said: “We are really excited about the launch of the Ethical Collection and are delighted to welcome The Pines Calyx on board as one of the inaugural members.

“We received an unexpected number of applications for the collection and the overall standard of responses was incredibly high. We expect much more than just energy-saving light bulbs and recycling so we have been very vigorous. We therefore congratulate The Pines Calyx for qualifying for all three stamps.”

The Pines Calyx was praised for several initiatives, including its reed bed sewage system, solar-powered hot water and using bio fuels for on-site vehicles.

The spokesman added: “They are also really committed to educating and helping their local community in becoming fully sustainable and zero-carbon, and have made genuine efforts beyond requirement. They deserve to be awarded.”

The Pines Calyx’s general manager, Louise Kjaertinge, added: “To win approval on all levels from such a well-respected specialist guide as Alastair Sawday is testament to the hard work and dedication of The Pines Calyx team, who have helped to make it such an inspiring centre for sustainable living.”

The low-carbon venue has won eight regional, national and international awards and its many ‘green’ features include a computer-controlled ‘virtual daylight’ system, natural air-conditioning, and organically managed gardens.
