EAST MALLING RESEARCH
Today it is the UK’s largest horticultural research and development organisation undertaking work in the perennial and clonally-propagated crops sector.
The scientists – funded by Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (Defra); Department for Business, Innovation and Skills; Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC); and the Technology Strategy Board – deliver innovative horticultural research programmes to increase production and mitigate against a more variable and changing climate.
With a focus on supporting the productivity of growers, the scientists are also tasked with enhancing the provision of other ecosystem services, by increasing the efficiency of resource use, producing less waste across the food system, and minimising greenhouse gas emissions.
Their research is being delivered through three scientific programmes: genetics and crop improvement; pest and pathogen ecology for sustainable crop management; and resource efficiency for crop production.
