L ROBINSON LTD

The Jubilee worm drive hose clip was invented and patented by Commander Lumley Robinson in 1921, and nearly a century later the company is still in Medway making the clips and other engineering products, led by the commander's great-grandson Ian Jennings.

L Robinson Ltd operates from a 3,700sq m facility in Gillingham from which it produces and distributes some 580 different product types. Its success has seen it take about half of the UK hose clip market and it also exports to Europe and more widely to the Middle East and East Asia markets.

In 2006 the company consolidated their five previous sites into one, meaning that for the first time since the company was founded; all manufacturing and technical facilities were in one location. However since then they have acquired Elms Lightening Fasteners based in Birmingham.

Ian Jennings explains their decision to stay in Medway, ‘there are good infrastructure links here, as we are connected to the M2 in both directions, which we need as we export globally.

'We use the road network through to the M25 for UK sales, the Channel ports for Europe, and container shipping to important markets in the Middle East, Japan and the USA, for which we use Southampton and Felixstowe ports’
he explains.

Jennings also comments that the Medway location enables him to be at the company’s German offices and warehouse much faster than he can get to many parts of the UK.

The company employs in the region of 130 people, many of whom are skilled engineering staff. In the past they recruited many from Chatham Dockyard and the Royal Engineers, however they now work with local training firms to find people with skills in tool making, design, mathematics and woodworking.

Mr Jennings admits that skilled labour is less plentiful than in the days of the docks, however he can still  find  all the skilled  people to meet the company’s needs in Medway.
