The UK is an important part of the company’s research and development (R&D) and global manufacturing operations. Pfizer employs around 2,500 in the UK working across 4 locations undertaking commercial business, R&D and manufacturing and distribution.
R&D operations in the UK take place at Discovery Park in Sandwich, Kent. Around 700 expert scientists, technicians, regulatory professionals and business experts work in world-class facilities to create life-saving and changing medicines for patients. Key capabilities at the site include; pharmaceutical sciences, worldwide safety and regulatory, quality assurance and development operations.
The company has a history going back to the 1950’s at the Sandwich site and some of their most important medicines were discovered there, including Celsentri® (maraviroc), the first new oral class of HIV treatment in more than a decade and Viagra®.
