VENOMTECH

This biotech company based at Discovery Park, near Sandwich, is involved in a new era in venom research to support drug discovery. Its work supports research into oncology, haematology, antimicrobials, immunology and growth factors, while its Tarantula Venom Array is utilised for research into pain therapies, insecticides and antimalarials.

Established in March 2010, Venomtech facilitates scientific research in the UK and globally through the provision of snake and invertebrate venom. As operations are based in the UK, the company supplies material safety data sheets (MSDSs) with all its products. This means UK researchers can benefit from access to unique venom arrays without the need to import.

Working closely with experts in exotic animal husbandry, the company’s purpose-built housing and breeding facilities ensure it is able to maintain a diverse stock and can supply venom previously unavailable.

Sound animal care and welfare is of the utmost importance to Venomtech and this includes the care of its snakes and all its invertebrates. All the company’s products come from live animals, requiring no terminal procedures. It also runs captive breeding programmes to help reduce the burden that collection has on wild populations.

A specific interest for Venomtech is in the needs of modern drug discovery and it offers a venom array for research into a number of high profile conditions, including ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) or Muscular Dystrophy research.

Given Venomtech’s unique position in the UK’s biotech support industry, the company successfully secured £100,000 from the Expansion East Kent fund to aid its further growth.
