For a while Ashford has been focused on securing its own economic prosperity, with commercial and residential development at the heart of its strategy.

In recent weeks and months, there have been a number of announcements that will drive Ashford forward.

Balancing the need to deliver jobs alongside houses has seen Quinn Estates and George Wilson Holdings unveil plans to construct a 590,000ft2 building along Station Road, next to The Everest Inn restaurant.

The mixed office and retail development, close to Ashford International Station, will be an integral part of the town’s emerging Commercial Quarter, bringing with it the prospect of hundreds of jobs.

Work to create the Commercial Quarter was kickstarted last year when Ashford Borough Council bought International House, the recent new home of Locate in Kent.

Kent architect Guy Holloway and regeneration firm U+I, together with Quinn Estates, have unveiled plans for major housing schemes at two sites in the town.

Close to Ashford International Station, plans have been submitted plans for 660 homes on the former Powergen site close to Victoria Way, with 400 of the homes earmarked for long-term private rent by residential specialist Neighbour.

If approved the regeneration project would link Ashford town centre with Victoria Park to the south, creating a new residential community and transforming a long unused site.

U+I has also acquired a 2.5ha site from the Homes and Communities Agency with plans expected to be submitted later this year for 200 homes, the proposed Chapel Down brewery site, a 120-bed hotel, and an Aldi food store, also on Victoria Way, near the railway station.

Hadlow College has also made a major commitment to further education in the town with a multi-million pound investment in Ashford College, supported by the South East Local Enterprise Partnership.

The college has signed a £10.8 million contract with BAM Construction to construct the first phase of a new town-centre college at Elwick Road. With the initial demolition work on the project already completed, BAM Construction can now get to work creating a 5,112m2 site to house 900 more students and replace its current home on Jemmett Road.

Due to be completed by early 2017, and open in September that year, the new campus will offer facilities to teach manufacturing, construction, technology and service sector courses.

Recognising that upgrading the town’s infrastructure will unlock sites for employment and housing, has led Highways England to consult on proposals to spend between £60.9m-£85.5m on a new junction – 10a – on the M20.

This consultation lasts until 17 March and sets out the preferred route for the junction 700m east of junction 10. It would include a link road to the A2070 at Ashford, with a new dual carriageway link road to the existing A2070 Southern Orbital Road (Bad Munstereifel Road), and connecting to the A20 Hythe Road.
