Locate in Kent, the investment promotion agency for Kent and Medway, has confirmed its support for the proposed Mountfield Park development in Canterbury on the basis of the contribution that the development as a whole will make to Canterbury’s economy and residents.

Locate in Kent wrote to Canterbury City Council’s planning department to voice its support for Corinthian Land’s proposed Mountfield Park development. The application includes plans for 4,000 new homes, 70,000m2 of employment floorspace, two primary schools and a community hub to include health services, local shops and community facilities. It also includes proposals for a package of measures to promote sustainable travel.

In her letter to the planning department, Mandy Bearne, Locate in Kent’s Director of Marketing and Research, highlighted the current need for new high quality commercial property for existing and new companies.

Mandy Bearne said: “Locate in Kent is happy to support this application because the proposals, if implemented, will provide a completely new sustainable district to the south of Canterbury. The housing content will make a significant contribution to Canterbury’s housing requirements, in a sustainable masterplanned development where all the social needs of the new community - a school, retail, community centre, healthcare facilities and recreational facilities - will be met. The development will also offer the residents the chance to work and live in the same location. Most importantly to Locate in Kent, 70,000m2 of mixed class A commercial property will be made available.”

With office space at a premium in the City, the development of new commercial property will draw new companies to the area, adding to the diversity of the local economy. The ratio of available properties in Canterbury to those being sought is one of the lowest for any district in Kent. Professional services occupiers in Canterbury have long been constrained by lack of premises as it is harder to find quality office space in Canterbury than in virtually any other district across the county.

John Trotter, Managing Director of developers Corinthian Land, said: “Since we first started thinking about the Mountfield Park development we were very clear that we wanted to develop a new, sustainable community and not just houses. The inclusion within the masterplan of commercial property will provide much needed space for businesses to move into and for new businesses to grow, while also providing opportunities for jobs within the development.

“Mountfield Park can clearly meet the acute need for additional commercial space that Locate in Kent has identified and we are very pleased to have their support.”

Formal consultation on the plans to develop Mountfield Park has now finished and it is anticipated that the application will be decided by Canterbury City Council’s Planning Committee in autumn this year. Further information about the proposals is available on the project’s website
