New homes for Ashford thanks to partnership

Two local organisations working in partnership will be at the heart of plans to create 150 new homes in the centre of Ashford after contracts were exchanged.

The new homes will be delivered by Orbit Homes, one of the UK’s leading housing associations, and Kent-based property and construction company, Chartway Group.

With Ashford College’s new Elnwick Road campus on track to be ready for the start of the 2017/18 academic year, work can now get under way on the new housing projects on the former Jemmett Road campus.

The news was welcomed by Nick Fenton, Chairman of Kent Developers Group, the organisation, which champions residential and commercial property developers across the county.

He said: “It is great that these two companies have come together through this joint venture to share the risk and the reward which enables them to deliver much-needed new homes for Ashford.

“Smaller house builders, like Chartway Group, have an important role to play in supporting housing associations, and at the same time delivering homes for private sale through its own Westerhill Homes division.”

The new £30m residential development will offer 25 rented, 50 shared ownership - part-buy, part-rent - and 53 outright sale homes by Orbit, with a further 30 outright sale homes through Chartway Group’s Westerhill Homes.

Orbit Homes has built 5,000 homes since 2013, and plans to build a further 1,100 in Kent over the next four years.

A spokesperson for Orbit Homes said: “By offering the new homes through a range of rental and home ownership options, we hope to meet different needs and aspirations and provide an inclusive community that people are proud to live in.

“Committed to tackling the housing crisis, this innovative joint venture with Chartway Group will also help in achieving Orbit’s target of building 12,000 homes by 2020.”

Construction on the site is expected to start by late summer 2017.
