Why businesses should make a second opinion their first step

Harley Street’s London Vision Clinic saved thousands of pounds when they applied the first rule of medicine to their own business.

The prestigious laser eye surgery specialists called on Kent-based heating company, Swale Heating, for a second opinion after being told by another firm that the boiler installed only 18 months earlier was undersized.

“Although the boiler was working, the radiators weren’t heating up,” explains LVC administrator, Grace Wright.

“We were told that, because we’re based in a large townhouse, we needed a much larger boiler and possibly even two, to provide enough heat. Swale Heating was recommended as a reliable alternative and it took them just half an hour to identify a completely different – and much more cost effective – solution.”

Max Rowson, Swale Heating’s Commercial Installation Manager, said: “The boiler provided sufficient heat when it was installed so it seemed unlikely that size was a problem. We took a different approach, getting a full history and investigating the system issues and recommended a full chemical flush.”

The busy clinic could not disappoint clients by closing or reducing their hours so Swale Heating engineers worked around the clinic’s diary, using early mornings, evenings and weekends to minimise disruption.

“The engineers were absolutely fabulous,” added Grace. “They knew exactly what they were doing and kept us well-informed throughout. They did everything with complete professionalism and to the highest standards.”

Two weeks later, Max says, the system was working perfectly.

“The chemical flush revealed that the water in the system was extremely contaminated – full of sludge and material breakdown – so it’s no surprise the radiators weren’t heating up properly. If London Vision Clinic had simply replaced the boiler, as originally advised, it would have made very little difference.”

Swale Heating engineers also balanced the whole system to ensure adequate circulation to each radiator.

Grace says they are so pleased with the outcome, they have now appointed Swale Heating to service the system. “The quote that Swale Heating gave us for the chemical flush was less than a third of the boiler replacement quote and we’d recommend them with absolutely no reservation.

“I think if we’d told them ‘We want to make it to the moon’, they’d have made sure we made it to the moon; they’re that sort of company.”

Meanwhile, Max has this advice for businesses who want to minimise problems with their heating systems.

“Reliable and cost-efficient heating means maintaining the integrity of the entire system, not just servicing the boiler. The best approach to save money and minimise problems is to set up a service and maintenance contract for both.

“Prevention is always better than cure – preventative maintenance on a regular basis will avoid problems that could mean expensive disruption for a busy business.”
