Gravesend’s Clifton Slipways move a step closer to redevelopment

Impressive proposals to revive the riverside site in Gravesend known as Clifton Slipways, has moved a step forward.

The plans to redevelop the land, which include Gravesend West Street train station and a pier, have been submitted to Gravesham Borough Council.

The developers, Downriver Properties, first held a number of public exhibitions in December to discuss their proposals with local residents and businesses. Since then the developers have used valuable feedback from the community to revise their plans, which they will be showing again this Friday and Saturday (12 and 13 February).

The development site encompasses land around the Stuart Road junction with West Street, and includes the site of the old Gravesend West Street station, which closed in 1968.

At one time passengers would arrive at the station and board steamer ferry services via the iron pier to destinations across the Thames, including services to Essex, East Anglia and even Rotterdam.

Part of the pier still exists but is in a poor condition as it hasn’t been used for decades. However restoration of the pier, along with public access, is included in the plans, alongside housing on the north and south sites, a new pedestrian footway along West Street, and a new flood protection wall providing river views and a riverside amenity area.

If planning permission is granted it is hoped that construction would begin within 12 and 18 months of approval, with a further 18 months before completion.

The public exhibitions will be held from 10am to 4pm on Friday 12th and 2pm to 4pm on Saturday 13th at Towncentric, St George's Square, Gravesend.
