BioGateway - creating borderless science

Kent has a large, successful cluster of Life Science companies which is increasingly recognised as taking its place beside London, Oxford and Cambridge.

The 151 companies in Kent employ about 6,800 and include small and big names, the latter including Pfizer, Mylan, Aesica, Diasorin and Sekisui. The cluster continues to grow with the relocation of companies both from the UK and overseas, such as Genea and Quivium, who come to Kent for its excellent science parks such as Discovery Park and Kent Science Park, existing talent and new graduates from Kent universities, and proximity to London and its regulatory bodies and Medcity.

Research suggests that companies within clusters are more competitive because of the networks and mutual support within the cluster. So to fully capitalise on this cluster, a new organisation, Biogateway was successfully launched in June 2015. The organisation is now run by a management group made up of life science and business services companies, and new Chief Executive Imran Khan.

Biogateway aims to provide the ideal environment to create success and sustainability within a competitive science market, through collaboration and knowledge transfer, work with thought leaders, events, the promotion of education and skills and assistance with resource efficiency through procurement.

Since its launch, BioGateway has signed up more than 100 members, and membership is growing. A wide range of services are being developed to support member companies.

It is proposed that Biogateway become part of a European Life Science Alliance, bringing together around 5,000 vibrant life science companies in the UK, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and Germany. As part of this, Biogateway will be working with Kent County Council on the Boost4Health programme which is part funded by the EU and will assist SMEs in the ‘member’ countries to internationalise, and particularly for UK companies, with market entry into mainland Europe.
