Margate’s Turner Contemporary has announced that Clive Stevens, the chairman of Kent accountancy firm Kreston Reeves and member of Locate in Kent’s Board, will take over as chairman from Stephen Sunnucks.

The gallery is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year and recently welcomed its two millionth visitor. It has engaged with more than 100,000 people with its learning programme and activities since opening in 2011, as well as contributing more than £41 million to the local economy through tourism and inward investment.

Mr Stevens is a founding trustee of the gallery and has been vice chair of the board since 2008. Regarding the appointment, the chartered accountant said: "I am delighted to become Turner Contemporary’s new chair.

"The gallery’s world-class programme inspires and delights audiences and plays a real role in the social and economic regeneration of Margate and East Kent.

"The future will not be without challenges but there are massive opportunities for continued growth and success.

"Working with children and young people, we inspire the next generation to develop their creative skills, enriching their lives and those of others.

"There has never been a more important time for the gallery and I believe our work transforms individual’s lives and helps build a better society."

Director Victoria Pomery said: “This is great news for Turner Contemporary. Clive Stevens has played an extraordinary role in the development of the gallery.

"We have a hugely exciting and ambitious programme planned for the next few years and it is excellent to have a chair, supported by a board of trustees, who is committed to the future success of the gallery and will support me and my team.
