Kent-based house builder Cox Developments (in association with Cox Restoration) has scooped a major award for its development of six homes in the North Downs village of Challock, near Ashford.
The Old Clockhouse Green development won the Best Small Development category in the Evening Standard New Homes Awards, beating a host of other quality schemes.
Director David Cox said: “We’re thrilled to have won this award with a development that is so close to our hearts. It is a huge achievement for us and an acknowledgement of the hard work of everyone involved.”
Old Clockhouse Green comprises six bespoke, 3 and 4 bedroom homes that pay homage to their rural surroundings. In order to recreate a traditional hamlet that looks like it has evolved over time, features such as Flemish bond brickwork, locally made tile hung walls, white weatherboarding, and timber framed windows have been employed.
Handmade wooden picket fences surround each property, made by local suppliers and created in the Kentish style. These give the homes a charming look and are an affectionate nod to the wider Challock architecture.
Internally, the detail is just as impressive, with cosy log burning fires, oak floors, doors and staircases. These classic features are fused with contemporary products including designer fitted kitchens, glass balustrades and underfloor heating – striking an ideal blend of old and new.
Old Clockhouse Green sits on land with strong ties to its builders. David Cox was born and grew up in Challock and the site of the development is part of Clockhouse Farm, which was once owned by David's family. Each house has been named after the different types of apples that were once farmed here. All six have now been sold.
Cllr Paul Clokie, Ashford Borough Council’s portfolio holder for planning and development, said: “We congratulate David and his team. As a borough council, we pride ourselves on the quality of the homes that are built in our area. We have space standards that are stricter than the national government’s and we take a robust approach while being proactive to the delivery of projects such as these.
“This scheme has clearly demonstrated a connection with the village and the homes have been designed to complement their surroundings. This is exactly the type of quality we want to champion in Ashford.”
Cox Developments will start work soon on two other small bespoke high quality developments in the village of Challock. “Both will be in the same traditional and award-winning style of Old Clockhouse Green,” adds David Cox.
