Skills boost agreement for Shepway

East Kent College and Shepway District Council have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that vows to promote further education and skills in the district, boosting the local economy and increasing job opportunities.

The agreement is a step forward for the local economy and for the College. By working together, East Kent College and Shepway District Council, along with other key stakeholders, such as the Kent & Medway Economic Partnership and the South East Local Enterprise Partnership, will be able to identify Shepway’s skills needs and deliver a range of programmes suitable for the area.

The Memorandum of Understanding will focus on developing high quality programmes for the area including: further education; the support of young people not in education, employment or training (NEETs) into employment; apprenticeships and workplace learning; higher education and professional learning; and community learning.

Shepway District Council recently contributed £500,000 to East Kent College’s Folkestone campus, part of a £4.4m programme of redevelopment.

Leader of Shepway District Council, David Monk, said: “I am really pleased that Shepway District Council worked with the authorities to help keep the Folkestone Campus open, and now, with this agreement with East Kent College, we can really help local people find work by offering training and apprenticeships by working with local employers like us.”

Apprenticeships will be a major focus, particularly with Shepway District Council extending its own apprenticeship scheme for a further three years. Since it was launched in 2012, the scheme has supported more than 150 new career opportunities, offering businesses up to £1,500 towards the cost of taking on an apprentice.

East Kent College also has campuses in Broadstairs and Dover. For more information visit www.eastkent.ac.uk.
