Maidstone is now home to the team behind a ground-breaking skin imaging and skin cancer treatment scanner, after the company Michelson Diagnostics worked with Locate in Kent.

Having outgrown its first home in Orpington, the Michelson Diagnostics management went in search of new premises. Thanks to property advice from the team at Locate in Kent, the county's investment promotion agency, the search led to Eclipse Park, near Junction 7 off the M20 at Maidstone, the business park being developed by Gallagher Group.

Thanks to VivoSight, the company is working with clinicians and medical researchers to help develop its non-invasive skin imaging and early-diagnosis skin cancer treatments for use in clinical research and hospitals.

Today, VivoSight scanners are used in five European countries, as well as USA, Australia and Brazil, and more than 8,000 patients have been scanned.

Jon Holmes, Chief Technology Officer at Michelson Diagnostics, said: "Our new location in Maidstone Eclipse Park is perfect as a base for the company's management, operational infrastructure, R&D and engineering hub, as we continue to expand the global sales and clinical applications of our VivoSight scanner.

"We are very pleased with the new premises and working environment that Locate in Kent helped us find."

The high-tech medical device company specialises in the clinical application of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) technology, which uses an advanced laser scanner to see into tissue with an unprecedented image resolution and quality of image.

Founded in 2006 by five experts in laser scanning, the company expects to add a further 18 people to its current 16 strong team over the next three years, to build upon the success of developing, building, testing and securing regulatory clearance for the use of its VivoSight OCT scanners in Europe and USA.

Paul Wookey, Chief Executive of Locate in Kent, said: "The brief for the new headquarters was quite precise as the company wanted new offices that offered the right quality of image for the growing med-tech device company, but also the necessary motorway connections and space to expand.

"Eclipse Park offered everything Michelson Diagnostics needed, and importantly also put the recently opened Kent Institute of Medicine & Surgery (KIMS) and proposed Maidstone Medical Campus within walking distance."

The potential for the company's growth has also been recognised by Escalate, the Regional Growth fund managed by Kent County Council, which approved a £600,000 interest-free loan after the company worked closely with High-Growth Kent and Locate in Kent.
