The Thanet based Cummins Power Generation has expanded its manufacturing operation after boosting its turnover to £400 million.

The power generation company is dedicated to improving electrical power by making it both more reliable and available, around the globe.

The Manston-based facility produces power generators and equipment that is distributed around the world, primarily used for medical and educational purposes.

The expansion will see the company increase its annual turnover to more than £400 million, which Cummins say they plan to double by 2020.

To cope with the influx of new business a new production area is being constructed at the Manston site, which means a number of skilled job opportunities will become available. The site currently employs around 600 staff, 150 of which work on the production lines building and testing the generators.

The investment will also enable manufacturing to be improved and the company will begin manufacturing electrical equipment for boats, taking over from Cummins Marine – a branch of the firm which specialised in the marine industry.

Marco Carini, plant manager, said: “The Kent plant has been on a transformational journey over the past five years and is now at the top of its game and leading by example.

“Our team has implemented super-efficient, high quality and innovative manufacturing techniques through using the latest in technology and programmes to improve shop-floor safety, product quality, productivity, lead and delivery times and customers service.”

Mr Carini added “The transfer of the new Cummins Marine business will adopt the current processes and standards at the Kent facility to allow us to meet customer demand.

"We have undertaken additional skills training for our operational and customer service staff to enable them to complete assembly of the units and understand the product.

“Our plan is to grow the Kent business from current annual sales of £400 million to £800 million by 2020, of which the mobile marine production will form an important part.

"Meeting our ambitious growth goals will improve the site’s sustainability, long-term future and secure and create jobs for local people and the Thanet area.”
