Maidstone-based civil engineering, aggregates, building and property business, Gallagher Group, is celebrating a quarter of a century of quarrying and looking forward to another 25 years, following the construction of a new tunnel.

At 100m long by 16m wide and 15m high, the tunnel took nine months to complete and will ensure Gallagher’s Hermitage Quarry, near Barming, remains operational as Kent’s only quarry producing high quality Kentish Ragstone.

The Gallagher Group, members of the Kent Developers Group, revealed the tunnel at an event for employees, customers and dignitaries. Pat Gallagher, Chairman of Gallagher Group, was joined at the official opening by Councillor Mark Dance, KCC’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Regeneration.

Mark Dance acknowledged the local importance of Gallagher Group, saying: “Pat and his team have built a business that Kent can be truly proud of. Not only is Hermitage Quarry producing the Kentish Ragstone needed by the construction industry, it provides the indigenous building stone for use in new build and restoration projects and it is providing important employment for local people.”

In addition to the tunnel, the extension of Hermitage Quarry has been the catalyst for new jobs and significant investment in new equipment, plant and vehicles, and the launch of new products Gallapave and Gallaflo for the local construction industry.
