Kent Science Park
Kent Science Park
Plans, which the owners of Kent Science Park near Sittingbourne believe will make it home to 4,150 employees over the next two decades, have been presented to Swale Borough Council and local residents.
Currently more than half (52%) of the companies at Kent Science Park are involved in life science, biotechnology, ICT or telecoms. A further third (34%) are involved in specialist engineering and manufacturing. The tenants currently employ more than 1,600 people on site
LaSalle Investment Management, which advises the owners of Kent Science Park, is proposing to undertake selective demolition and redevelopment within the original science park. Two new distinct commercial centres would be created, one for laboratories and offices, and the other for light industrial, data centres and energy-related businesses.
The masterplan also proposes that adjoining the science park, between 300 and 400 flats and houses would be built, in a mix of 1, 2 and 3-bedroom units.
The new homes would be made available for rent to employees of park tenants who might have a temporary need for housing nearby or for those who have difficulty finding homes in the borough.
Also included is the relocation of Sittingbourne Football Club and the development of new facilities, plus the prospect of turning the listed Woodstock House into a public house.
The Kent Science Park masterplan has been welcomed by Swale Borough Council as a way of ensuring it diversifies and boosts the local economy by attracting more high value jobs in the life science and knowledge-based industries.
Kent Science Park is part of The Business Environments for Science and Technology (BEST) Network, which is the largest privately-owned portfolio of science and technology parks in the UK.
