Visitors are currently worth £3.8 billion to the Kent economy supporting 77,000 jobs. With the average overnight visitor spending almost 6 times the amount of a day visitor you can see why Visit Kent is calling for sites suitable for hotel development.
To achieve continued growth from our visitor economy we must drive overnight stays in our region. The single biggest barrier to achieving this is the shortage of hotel rooms – especially 4 and 5 star accommodation with Food & Drink facilities and large scale conference/meeting and event spaces.
Hotel development is also identified as a priority in the new Tourism Sector Deal which set out a plan to develop an additional 130,000 bedrooms nationally by 2025. So, expect to see it feature in future local plans.
Not being ones to rest on our laurels, or wait for planners to catch up, we are addressing this challenge head on with our partners, Visit Kent. We are working together proactively source investors and are already in dialogue with some major hotel groups and will be attending industry events like the Annual Hotel Conference in October.
You can help us maximise our investment to present a compelling business case for investment in our region with details of potential development sites. Now obviously it would help if they are in an area already identified for employment, but we don’t want that to limit you. We want you to reach out your clients and use your imagination.
Where do you know in Kent and Medway that would make a great place to stay?
