Buckmore Park gets green light to invest in its future

Buckmore Park has been given the go-ahead to create The Paddock, a new motorsport-themed centre at the much-loved Kent karting circuit.

The owners of Buckmore Park can now progress their plans to invest in a new 20,000ft2 building and deliver a state-of-the-art simulator room, a restaurant and bar, and a viewing terrace overlooking the circuit. With the ambition to open in 2027, The Paddock will meet the growing demand from the public and karting community.

The design of the building takes its inspiration from the pitlanes of the golden era of motorsport and the life of John Surtees – the circuit’s former owner and seven-times motorcycle world champion and Formula One world champion. The Paddock is expected to become the go-to destination for those eager to get their first experience of the sport as well as keen UK and international karters, and sustain Buckmore Park’s future as the UK’s favourite circuit.

Leonora Martell-Surtees, co-owner of Buckmore Park and daughter of John Surtees, said: “This decision is a great vote of confidence in what we do at Buckmore and how we support the karting community and local economy.

“The combination of the challenging circuit offering an exhilarating racing experience while also having the facilities that create a destination in its own right add an exciting new dimension to Buckmore Park.”

The plans approved by officers at Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council will create a 120-seat restaurant and sports bar, alongside 18 state-of-the-art motion simulators, plus a 100-seat briefing and conference room. A 1,000ft2 roof terrace will give visitors the opportunity to view the racing live at the international standard circuit.

Cllr Matt Boughton, Leader of Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, said: “The owners of Buckmore Park and their team worked very closely with our planning officers, giving us the confidence to grant permission for this exciting investment in the borough.”

The Paddock will also provide a new home for the successful Buckmore Driver Development Programme, which provides an intensive week-long course to elevate young drivers’ careers with tuition on fitness, nutrition, engineering as well as racing skills. The circuit has played an important part in the careers of such drivers as Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, and more recently Lando Norris and Ollie Bearman. It plans to continue to bring forward the future champions of motorsport.

When it opens The Paddock will be a venue for visitors of all ages to watch Formula 1, World Endurance Championship, Formula E and F1 Academy as well as having the chance to get on track themselves.

Recognising the circuit’s motorsports pedigree, the plans will see a reception designed to display a heritage racing car as a focal point for visitors on arrival.

The Paddock is expected to add a further 30 jobs to the 50-strong workforce already at the circuit close to the M2 at the top of Blue Bell Hill.
